Where are the jobs?
Dave Calus

As a recruiter, we get asked many questions from candidates seeking employment. The most frequently asked is “Are there jobs out there in Rochester?” or “Are you seeing anything going on out there?”

The answer is YES and NO….it depends. I am sure you hear people talking about how they just got downsized from their job after 15 years with the same company, so to that individual, the job market might not look too good. There are people that “JUST LANDED” – rejoicing that after a strenuous job search, they were hired. There are the optimistic job seekers that say “things are starting to pick up.” There are the pessimistic ones that say “There’s nothing going on in Rochester.”

I suppose it’s a function of how you perceive the world around you…….

Entry Level Jobs and College Career Fair Time
erassociates

It is certainly hard to believe that this time of year has come up on us again….spring, college career fairs and graduation! Without a doubt, a time of the year filled with hope, anticipation and in some cases, fear.
It is no secret that the unemployment rate in Rochester has been high. It is also no surprise that companies in the area are continuing to downsize their work force. Competition is at an all time high. If you are looking for a job right now, it simply means that you need to be realistic and strategic about your career and your search process.   This holds true for all job seekers. Whether you are an experienced worker making a career transition, a student looking for summer work, or a recent college graduate, each group faces challenges of their own. Assistance with your search can be found from many resources. Don’t forget to utilize your college career or alumni office, local career consulting firms and of course recruiting or temporary agencies.
Be realistic with your salary expectations! Yes, we all want to earn as much as possible, but with the market conditions as they are, realignment might be necessary. Remember getting a foot in the door, in addition to establishing a good reputation and trust is the key!!! Pursue a career that will allow you to grow into a progressively responsible and challenging career.

How not to ruin your next career move
Abby Parnell

Ok…so you’re ready for the next step in your career. It’s time to make the big move. What now?
Have you done the due diligence necessary for your job change?
Are you sure you’re making the right move?
According to a recent study done by research associates at Harvard Business School it appears that many people are jumping into the next position without thinking things through. They came across five consistently made mistakes which can help ruin your career.
The number one most commonly made mistake is that people are not doing the necessary research and due diligence before making the move. Without researching the company, understanding the business and culture, how can you be sure that this is going to be a good fit? Part of the reason that many people do this is that they are not moving “towards” their next career move but instead are running “from” their current job. In a haphazard attempt to get out of an unhappy situation you can often find yourself in a similar or even worse situation if you don’t do the proper research. Another common mistake is putting too much emphasis on the salary number and not taking all the other aspects into consideration.   Too many people are not thinking long term and putting the necessary time into their job search.
With all that being said…what better way to handle a job search than to have someone helping you do all this due diligence.   To have someone who can take some of that work off your plate.
Well what a coincidence…that is EXACTLY what a recruiter does.

My Two Cents on Social Network Screening
Jill Knittel

The article recently written by Kathy Kowalenko entitled “Beware: Recruiters are Screening You On Your Social Network Profiles” (See below) caused me to hesitate a little bit, and then compelled me to give you my two cents on how social networking has ‘hit the scene’ in our recruiting efforts to find top talent.

It is true that recruiters are now using social networking sites to do research on candidates prior to representing them on certain positions. In fact, I recently asked one of my candidates to please clean up the “F-Bombs” on his Facebook page because a few of my corporate clients are connected to me on Facebook and LinkedIn. It is true that social networking has done a great job at merging our personal and professional lives – for the good or for the bad.

I agree with Kathy’s reasons of why recruiters use social networking sites, but would like to add a few more reasons:
1)     From a recruiter’s perspective, it is so much easier to represent somebody when you can put a face with a name. In this world of online recruiting, I represent people from all over the nation and don’t have the luxury to meet every candidate I represent in person. LinkedIn makes it easier for me to understand a candidate’s reputation (through posted references), see how active they are in their field (through groups they belong to) and put a face with a name, which is still important, even in 2010.
2)     I used LinkedIn to show them who I am. I think it is important for people I represent to see who I am and what my resume looks like, too. Recommendations from others posted on my LinkedIn profile helps those candidates who might not have worked with me before see what others had to say.

JOB SEEKERS TURN TO TEMPORARY STAFFING AGENCIES DURING ECONOMIC RECESSION
erassociates

Over and over I am hearing from candidates how different the job market of today is compared to the job market of yesterday. Finding employment as we come out of this recession is much more challenging. To move your job search along at a nice healthy pace it has become necessary to almost think of yourself as a juggler in the circus. Imagine each aspect of your job search as being one of the objects that you must keep up in the air. Keeping the rhythm, keeping them moving (in the air) is the object right???? When we let just one of them fall, then the process has come to a stop, the pattern disrupted, and the goal further away. The same idea can be applied to your job search. Using all the tools you have to find employment is necessary. Be sure to regularly check internet postings such as CareerBuilder, Monster or Indeed, check postings made on individual employer web sites, attend networking groups and job fairs, and remember to seek the assistance of recruiters and contract temporary service agencies. Many employers are using these types of services to fill their open jobs. Temporary agencies are not just filling those minimum wage jobs these days. We have evolved. We often specialize in professional, high tech direct placement and temp to hire opportunities as well. Contact us to find out more!

Using Recruiters, Pro or Con?
Dave Calus

What are the pro's and con's to using a Recruiter in your career search?

It's obvious which side of the fence I'm going to fall on in this debate.....obviously there are some major pro's to using a GOOD recruiter.  Think of recruiters like your CAREER AGENT, we do this for a living and while we get paid for it, there are some advantages to the candidate and to the client, otherwise we wouldn't be in business.

I could list all the PRO's to using a Recruiter in a career search, instead, I'll take the neutral route and leave that list up to your individual discretion.  I will say the challenge lies in WHO you use as your Career Agent.  It's not as easy as spreading your resume around to every agency in the market....that approach can give you a bad reputation and the GOOD recruiters won't want to work with you.

If you don't need a Recruiter to help you in your search, that's bound to happen, we can't help everyone.  However, to take your career to the next level a GOOD Recruiter is most often the best way to increase your chances of success.

Take a look at an example of the Pro's of using a Recruiter.
