The purpose of a personal pitch is to get the person hooked and eager to learn more about you. This pitch is often called an elevator pitch as you should be able to get your point across in a short amount of time as if you were on (yes, you guessed it) an elevator! Here are the three most import things to remember when preparing and perfecting your pitch:

Have you been unemployed for too long and you just can’t seem to catch a break? Maybe it’s time to evaluate your job search strategy and make some changes.

Determine your direction. All too often we meet job seekers who, when asked what type of position they are looking for, will say “I’ll do anything!” What that means to us is, wow, you seem kind of flakey and have no idea what you are looking for.  What are your skills? What gets you excited?

Be true to yourself. Don’t apply to every position you come across. When we see that someone has applied for one position that pays $100K and another that pays $40K, that raises some major red flags! You are either selling yourself really short and are applying for something that you are overqualified for, or you are wasting everyone’s time by applying for something that you are extremely underqualified for. You know better than anyone else what you are capable of and how much you should be paid.

We all hear that most jobs (75% to 85%, reportedly) are not advertised in the newspaper or posted on web job boards. These invisible jobs are the infamous "hidden job market," and you gain knowledge of the jobs by networking your way into them.  As I thought about the importance of networking; not only to obtain employment but as a natural approach and discipline to developing ones career I did some research on how much “self-help” guides, books, seminars, boot camps, online discussion groups  an individual can leverage; in fact I could reference 4,951 web sites with just one search effort! Wow... a little overwhelming yet why so much attention?
