Honesty is the Best Policy

Have you ever been tempted to add something to your resume because it sounds good? Or on the other hand, maybe you conveniently decided to leave some key details out of your resume in hopes that no one would notice? If there is one piece of advice I could pass along to job seekers it would be this: Honesty is the best policy! Lies will always catch up with you, it’s just a matter of time.

All too often we see candidates who embellish their resumes. Have a gap between jobs? Be prepared to truthfully explain why you have this gap. Some people get nervous and extend the dates listed on another job to make it look as though there was never a break in employment. Not only is this dishonest, but you will be caught. A simple background check and employment verification will prove otherwise and will therefore disqualify you from a job. Furthermore, this dishonesty will prevent us from working with you in the future. It’s okay to have gaps, many people do, just be prepared to speak to it.

Another resume no-no we’ve seen is adding languages and technologies that you aren’t actually experienced with. For example, don’t put “fluent in German” if you can only speak a few sentences. Instead, if you are able to generally understand the language or converse (minimally) then put “knowledgeable in German.” I’ve seen candidates make this mistake before only to find out the interviewer is actually fluent in said language… Yikes!

The moral of the story is this: Be truthful, be yourself. Your skills and experience will get you where you need to be. If you question whether or not something on your resume is completely honest, then chances are you need to make some edits.
