Have you ever wondered if you should list certain activities or affiliations on your resume? Well I’m here to let you know what you should and should not include! When it comes to politics and religion you should tread lightly. Unless you are demonstrating that you have held a leadership position for a particular group, opinions and views should be omitted from your resume. If you can show that your involvement with a particular group is directly related to a position you are applying for then yes, you may include it.

For example, if you were the Fundraising Chairperson for a Democratic candidate in your county, it would make sense to show how much you were able to raise in a short period of time – especially if you are applying for a fundraising position with a non-profit organization. However, if your role was simply to hand out flyers and ask for votes, this should not be included. Why? Because the only purpose of that would be to reveal your political party affiliation. Other examples of what you should or should not include on your resume are shown below:

DO include: Treasurer of Catholic Church of Rochester
DO NOT include: Member of Catholic Church of Rochester
DO NOT include: Bible quotes (this also goes for emails and cover letters – we see this all the time, big no-no!)
DO include: Lead Fundraiser for Local Politician
DO NOT include: Republican Voter

A resume is no place for opinions. It’s meant to show your professional experience and capabilities. You don’t want to set an employer up for discriminatory action, so when in doubt, leave it off of your resume.
