Last week’s blog discussed “The Rise of the Video Interview.” For a variety of reasons, many hiring managers are now choosing to do virtual interviews. Part two of the blog series focuses on the best ways to prepare for your small-screen debut!
Dress the part. Just because you aren’t meeting the hiring manager in person doesn’t make it any less informal. You should absolutely still wear a suit for the interview! And I mean a full suit, not just a suit coat. Can you imagine standing up at the end of the interview and they see that you have paired your nice suit coat with sweat pants? It’s probably safe to say you wouldn’t get the job…Be aware of your surroundings. Make sure you are somewhere with zero chance of interruption. If you are doing a video interview from your home, make sure you are in private room without any distracting objects behind you. Have a dog? Get someone to take Fido for a walk until you’ve finished the interview. You should also double check that you have adequate lighting so you can be easily seen on the other end.
Do a test run. Make sure the equipment works properly and that the audio is clear and loud enough. Doing a trial run will also help you to see how you come across on the computer or projection screen. Is the camera too close or too far from your face? This is also a chance to double check your afore-mentioned surroundings.
Make eye contact. I know it’s hard to make eye contact with someone who isn’t actually in the room, but do your best to look directly into the camera when you are speaking. You should treat this interview just as you would a face-to-face interview (minus the handshake).
Now all there is left to do is wait for the job offer!
