Interviews can be nerve-racking, but don’t let your anxiety get the best of you. Your body language can be just as important as the words that come out of your mouth.

The Handshake. First things first. Aside from appearance, the handshake is the first thing the hiring manager will notice about you. Make sure you offer a firm handshake, but be sure not to be so firm that you will break any bones!

Eye Contact. Even if you are uncomfortable, keep eye contact with the hiring manager.

Playing with your hair. Playing with your hair is distracting, and it’s even more distracting if it’s hanging in front of your face. Be sure to keep your hair out of the way so you can keep that strong eye contact.

Posture. Don’t get too comfortable in the hot seat. Remember what your momma told you: Sit up straight and don’t slouch.

Folded Arms. Crossing your arms can make you look standoffish and uninterested. Try to keep your hands in your lap to avoid this.

Nod your head. Give slight nods of agreement throughout the interview. It lets the hiring manager know that you are listening and interested.

Don’t let poor body language be the factor that keeps you from getting your dream job. Practicing interviewing with a friend or family member and videotape yourself during the process. When you sit down to watch your body language you might be surprised to see that the little things you do turn out to be big distractions. Remember, you only have one chance to make a first impression, so make sure it’s the right one!
