Is it time to break up with your job?

Has your job run its course and you need to cut ties? How do you know if it’s the right timing or the right thing to do?

First, you need to realize what it is that is making you unhappy. Is there nowhere for you to move up within the company? Maybe the company isn’t keeping up with new technology and you feel like your skills will become extinct. It’s important to understand if these are things that can be fixed. If not, it may be time to have the break-up talk.

Depending on what type of relationship you have with your boss, think about if he/she would be understanding and willing to help you find a new opportunity. Or, consider talking to HR about your concerns. Maybe they will be willing to hear you out and make some changes. After all, if you are a great employee they will do their best to keep you!

However, sometimes those talks aren’t possible or maybe you spend every second of the day at work and you don’t even have time to think about starting to interview for a new job. Obviously you don’t need me to tell you how bad the economy is right now, but if you MUST leave your job without having a new one lined up, you need to make sure that you can financially afford to be unemployed for at least six months.  Again, I really don’t recommend leaving a job without having something to fall back on, but only you know what your limit is and what you want out of life.

With that said, please don’t talk negatively about your job while interviewing for a new one. Talking poorly about your current/former boss, coworkers or company in general is seen as unprofessional and makes you look disloyal in the eyes of a hiring manager. Breaking up is hard to do, but leaving a job doesn’t have to be a negative experience.
