This week’s blog is inspired by one of my favorite quotes:

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.” - Thoreau

Think back to when you were a child. What made you happy then? Do the same things still make you happy today? Where did you see yourself when you looked into the future? Are you there yet? Why not? Sorry if I seem like your mother with the 20 questions, but it’s time for you to focus on yourself!

“To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.”
– Christian D. Larson

You spend more time with your coworkers than you do with your own family. With that said, do you enjoy spending time with your colleagues, or does their negativity sometimes bring you down? Have you ever really noticed that when you have a positive attitude everyone else tends to follow suit (well, with the exception of the inevitable downer)?

It’s 10:00am and I’m feeling pretty energized and ready to tackle the day. I’ve had my two cups of coffee and have sorted through my emails and paperwork, so now it’s time for some heavy lifting, (a.k.a. blogging).  Some of my colleagues were here very early and way too energized at 8:00am. Other colleagues we know to avoid and not speak to until about 9:00am. So as you can see, even in a small office like ours, peak times of productivity vary greatly depending on the person.

Ten weeks ago the entire ERA staff began a weight loss competition. After losing 101.2 pounds in all, we quickly realized that more was gained than lost (figuratively speaking). We learned the importance of portion control and a truly balanced diet. Sure, this isn’t a new concept, but it makes a lasting impact when you are forced to write down each and every crumb of food you place in your mouth.

The winning team lost  9 percent body fat, and the overall winner lost 18.2 pounds in ten weeks!  Participants credit their weight loss to limiting carbs and upping their protein intake.

As the ten week competition came to an end we wondered if we could continue on with our healthy eating habits. While there were many calories consumed the day the competition ended, most people have continued to follow their nutritional guidelines.

We can honestly say that our employees seem happier overall. The reason? We know we have the support of our colleagues to make healthy decisions. Additionally, it is a proven fact that when you drink plenty of water and eat right your brain is better able to focus on the job at hand. The end result being improved productivity and performance. Taking it a step further, healthier employees means fewer sick days. If you are interested in beginning a weight-loss program at your office, visit www.weightlossforwellness.com to get more details.

Who do you aspire to be? Are there certain projects or initiatives you keep putting off? Well 2011 is the time to start! If you haven’t done so already, talk to your boss about your career path and where you see yourself going. Are you happy with where you are or would you like to ultimately manage your own team?   If you don’t have this discussion then it’s hard to get yourself started on the path to success… don’t put it off!

Give me your number from 1 to 10

Most employees can not wait for the weekends; TGIF. On Sunday night they are already tweeting or updating their Facebook status with phrases like “hope this week goes by fast” or “why do weekends need to end.” Monday for some is a stomach-turning, Tuesday is gutting through that report and Wednesday is “hump” day, just because we need to look forward to something.

So pick your number! Choosing one, means you are at the ultimate low and choosing ten would be the happiest you’ve ever been (or potentially could be). Each morning determine where you stand on the scale of happiness.
