You’re interviewing at the company of your dreams, the meeting is going well and you think you are going to get an offer afterwards. Then all of a sudden the interviewer says, “We give a standard personality test to all candidates.” What do you say?  How would you react?

As if looking for a job isn’t already hard enough, try looking for a job AND being pregnant. Disclaimer: I am not speaking from experience on this one, so as usual, this is just my opinion. Let me start by saying, it’s completely illegal for a hiring manager/recruiter to ask you if you’re pregnant. However, if you are obviously showing, it’s usually best to address the topic (you’re not fooling anyone).

If you are showing, the hiring manager has the legal right to ask if you are physically capable of handling the daily responsibilities associated with this job. That might include the ability to lift 40lbs on a regular basis or being on your feet all day. Before interviewing for a job, it’s important to know what the requirements are as well as if you truly are capable of fully accomplishing the necessary tasks.

There’s no better time to look for a new job than when you actually have a job. Consider yourself lucky that you are gainfully employed and are choosing to seek alternative employment. It can, however, get tricky to find time to job search, interview and maintain your cool during the process. The following tips should help you as you embark on your job search while you are already employed:

Accepting Constructive Criticism

Just as it’s important in everyday life, it’s even more important to learn how to accept constructive criticism in the staffing and recruiting world. When you are able to take advice from others you will see yourself in a whole new (and better) light.

·         Understand that no one is perfect. Don’t take criticism too personally. Just because someone is offering you advice on how to improve your skills doesn’t mean they think you are the pits. Recruiters WANT you to succeed. Open and honest communication is an essential part of the business. Please don’t be too hard on yourself and remember that the person in front of you isn’t perfect either (no need to tell us, we already know that).

I felt compelled to prepare this note after posting a Director of Operations position last week.  You may have noticed that I asked for salary history and requirements upon submittal of resumes.  Most applicants either ignored the request or didn't notice it.

I get it- many individuals don't want to provide salary information because it might knock them out of the running, or they might go in too low and ruin their chances for negotiation at a later date.

Let me tell you why I asked this question - and also help you prepare for these types of requests in the near future, because these inquiries will continue from recruiters and companies as the market continues to recover.

5 Signs of Shady Recruiters & Job-Seekers

As is the case in all industries, there can be some shady business in the staffing world, too. Today it’s my mission to help you recognize shady recruiters and shady job-seekers. First, it’s best to learn what a recruiter should do before you understand what they shouldn’t do.

A seasoned recruiter will take the time to understand your best interests as well as those of the client. You should ALWAYS know where your resume is being sent. Furthermore, you should view your relationship with a recruiter as a partnership. A good recruiter will ask you all the right questions and know exactly what you are looking for in the ideal position. They should keep you in the loop on progress and provide you with timely feedback throughout the process.

The purpose of a personal pitch is to get the person hooked and eager to learn more about you. This pitch is often called an elevator pitch as you should be able to get your point across in a short amount of time as if you were on (yes, you guessed it) an elevator! Here are the three most import things to remember when preparing and perfecting your pitch:

Have you ever been tempted to add something to your resume because it sounds good? Or on the other hand, maybe you conveniently decided to leave some key details out of your resume in hopes that no one would notice? If there is one piece of advice I could pass along to job seekers it would be this: Honesty is the best policy! Lies will always catch up with you, it’s just a matter of time.

Have you been unemployed for too long and you just can’t seem to catch a break? Maybe it’s time to evaluate your job search strategy and make some changes.

Determine your direction. All too often we meet job seekers who, when asked what type of position they are looking for, will say “I’ll do anything!” What that means to us is, wow, you seem kind of flakey and have no idea what you are looking for.  What are your skills? What gets you excited?

Be true to yourself. Don’t apply to every position you come across. When we see that someone has applied for one position that pays $100K and another that pays $40K, that raises some major red flags! You are either selling yourself really short and are applying for something that you are overqualified for, or you are wasting everyone’s time by applying for something that you are extremely underqualified for. You know better than anyone else what you are capable of and how much you should be paid.

Job seekers, how often have you taken advantage of the information on Glassdoor.com? For those of you who are unfamiliar with the information-packed website, Glassdoor.com is a compilation of reviews about companies, bosses, salary ranges, etc. Past and current employees go online and rate their companies and offer details on the reasons for such ratings. Another huge benefit? Past interviewees share some of the oddball questions you can expect during an interview with a particular company!

Have you ever wondered if you should list certain activities or affiliations on your resume? Well I’m here to let you know what you should and should not include! When it comes to politics and religion you should tread lightly. Unless you are demonstrating that you have held a leadership position for a particular group, opinions and views should be omitted from your resume. If you can show that your involvement with a particular group is directly related to a position you are applying for then yes, you may include it.

You are well aware of the importance of a first impression, which is why you wear a suit to a job interview. Right? Well, then why do so many job seekers dress casually when attending a job fair? We are frequently amazed by the number of candidates we see at job fairs who come in wearing t-shirts and torn jeans. It’s extremely important to come to a job fair well prepped and well groomed. Here are a few tips:

Interviews can be nerve-racking, but don’t let your anxiety get the best of you. Your body language can be just as important as the words that come out of your mouth.

The Handshake. First things first. Aside from appearance, the handshake is the first thing the hiring manager will notice about you. Make sure you offer a firm handshake, but be sure not to be so firm that you will break any bones!

Eye Contact. Even if you are uncomfortable, keep eye contact with the hiring manager.

Playing with your hair. Playing with your hair is distracting, and it’s even more distracting if it’s hanging in front of your face. Be sure to keep your hair out of the way so you can keep that strong eye contact.

Is it time to break up with your job?

Has your job run its course and you need to cut ties? How do you know if it’s the right timing or the right thing to do?

First, you need to realize what it is that is making you unhappy. Is there nowhere for you to move up within the company? Maybe the company isn’t keeping up with new technology and you feel like your skills will become extinct. It’s important to understand if these are things that can be fixed. If not, it may be time to have the break-up talk.

Depending on what type of relationship you have with your boss, think about if he/she would be understanding and willing to help you find a new opportunity. Or, consider talking to HR about your concerns. Maybe they will be willing to hear you out and make some changes. After all, if you are a great employee they will do their best to keep you!

20 Tips on How to Nail an Interview

We love this article we found on www.HowToNailAnInterview.com!  See below for great ways to prep for your big interview:

1. 10 seconds to sell or say so long

Unless your resume catches the interviewer's eye in 10 seconds it's over, you're done. So the big question is how do I catch the interviewer's eye? Here comes the best advice on how to get a job interview you'll ever get. Cater your resume to the job description! I can't stress this point enough. It's imperative that you cater your resume to each position you apply for. And I mean taking each line on the job description and writing a line on your resume to reflect your experience with regard to that line.

Yes, it takes more time than sending the same resume to 100's of jobs, but you're far better off applying to a fraction of those jobs with a resume specifically written for each job. Put yourself in the interviewer's shoes. Their job is to hire the most qualified candidate. They've been given a set of qualifications to look for: aka the job description, and that's exactly what they're after, so give it to them!

A QR code is a two-dimensional bar code that contains a set of data. This can include text, numbers or even a website link. The QR codes can be read by simply taking a picture with your Smartphone, which will automatically translate the code and load the embedded information.

While a QR code isn’t necessary to include in your resume, it will certainly make yours stand out from the rest! So now the question is, what information do you want linked to this code? Here are a few suggestions:

5 Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager During an Interview

A few weeks ago we covered the important questions for the hiring manager to ask during an interview. Now it’s time to switch gears and prep those of you who are interviewing!

ALWAYS have a list of questions prepared before you walk in for your interview. Not only will it show that you are organized, but it will be helpful if you forget something during the interview. With that said, DO NOT ask questions that could have been answered by visiting the company’s website.
