As a recruiter, we get asked many questions from candidates seeking employment. The most frequently asked is “Are there jobs out there in Rochester?” or “Are you seeing anything going on out there?”
The answer is YES and NO….it depends. I am sure you hear people talking about how they just got downsized from their job after 15 years with the same company, so to that individual, the job market might not look too good. There are people that “JUST LANDED” – rejoicing that after a strenuous job search, they were hired. There are the optimistic job seekers that say “things are starting to pick up.” There are the pessimistic ones that say “There’s nothing going on in Rochester.”
I suppose it’s a function of how you perceive the world around you…….
Positive people will look at the trends in the market and take advantage of their transferrable skills. Negative people will look at the downside and let the news about the recessive economy impact their attitude and will be cynical.
I say - set your goals, prioritize your needs, set the right expectation and keep an open mind to what you consider a job. Survival jobs are out there……I’ve been through the unfortunate experience of being downsized in Rochester - TWICE between 2000 and 2005. I did what I had to do to make ends meet – and I never considered doing it outside of the Rochester area.
Rochester has much more to offer than what job seekers see at face value, because sometimes the pressures and frustration can cloud one’s perspective and interrupt your focus…….STAY ON TARGET, stick to your job search plan – and if you don’t have one – put one together, it will help get you through the challenging times.
