Based on an article by Dimitri A.C. Ly, Career Advisor
Ly explains the importance of research and knowledge of the companies who will be attending. Ly suggests organizing your day before showing up and always having a destination list of prospective companies you would like to visit.
Meeting people at job fairs are interviews, so treat them the same. Always dress professionally: “No employer has ever turned down a candidate for wearing a suit.” There is nothing worse then a great resume wearing a pair of jeans.
Ly also has a great point when he writes about optimizing your time in line. The time waiting in line should be used wisely; “avoid impatient gestures, such as sighing and checking your watch.” If you are waiting, flip through the company’s pamphlet or your notes and act interested.
Another important tip that Ly doesn’t mention in this article is to have your 30-second commercial ready for everyone you meet. This is brief background of your professional experience, a business reason as to why you are looking for an opportunity, and what you are looking for in your next position. Stay positive; never speak poorly about people or companies. Lastly, people want to work with people they like, so always put on a smile! |

Career fairs are a great way to get you in front of perspective companies; although the amount of people and companies at a job fair might be overwhelming. There are simple steps in which you can prepare. Dimitri A.C. Ly has tips in the article Career Fair Survival Guide:
